Artist Statement
When I look at a piece of wood I try to see beyond its bark and borders and envision its transformation into a piece of art. I don’t think I will ever be bored as I work on my lathe and one shape morphs into another. There is always an element of mystery as the layers are peeled away and the beauty of texture and pattern come into focus.Whether a finished vessel is functional or not I try to create a design that takes into account the special characteristics of each individual piece of wood. No two pieces, even within a species, will be the same and I strive to enhance the natural characteristics of the raw material into a complementary form.
